Miami, FL – January 15, 2025 –
Tunnel Projects is thrilled to present Mate Masie, the debut solo exhibition by Miami-based artist Najja Moon. Opening on January 18, 2025, the exhibition delves into themes of wisdom, repetition, internal dialogue, and the interconnectedness of movement and knowledge. Rooted in the Ghanaian Adinkra symbol Mate Masie—translated as "I have heard and kept it" —Moon’s show is a meditation on what is heard, held, and repeated to foster wisdom, growth, and imagination. The symbol, which Moon has worn around her neck for the past two years, serves as both a guiding philosophy and an anchor for this body of work. "These basketball cards are affirmations and aspirations," Moon shares. "The meditations I hear, keep, and repeat. What we consume physically, mentally, and emotionally are the things
we say to ourselves. The repetitions are deposits into my embodied knowledge. The repetition is god."
This collection showcases over 300 small, hand-drawn basketball card-style artworks—each one a unique reflection of internalized wisdom. The exhibition also features a sculptural installation of an interior door adorned with a basketball hoop, two large-scale photographs and a zine inspired by the iconic Eastbay magazine, offering a fresh take on storytelling through a nostalgic sports lens.
The works invite viewers into a layered experience that connects Moon’s love for basketball and the nuanced intersections of identity. From her background as a preacher’s kid and a daughter of musicians to her evolution from athlete to artist, Moon’s journey reverberates through her pieces. Mate Masie furthers Moon’s remarkable career, which includes her commission as the inaugural artist for The Bass Museum’s “New Monuments” series and exhibitions across the U.S. and Europe. Known for her ability to transform personal narratives into universal meditations, Moon is breaking new ground with this solo show.
The exhibition will be held at Tunnel Projects, an artist-run initiative located in an underground parking lot in Little Havana. Tunnel Projects is dedicated to providing artists with a platform to exhibit, develop, and explore their work through community engagement and experimentation.
